Prodeco Group is a prominent entity in Colombia's mining industry, historically involved in coal production and export. It began its journey in 1995 when Glencore, a global leader in natural resource production, acquired the company along with key assets like the Calenturitas and Cerrejón Central mines. Over the years, Prodeco expanded its operations, acquiring additional mines such as Carbones de La Jagua and Consorcio Minero Unido, as well as a significant stake in Fenoco’s railway network to streamline coal transportation.
Prodeco reached several milestones, including initiating coal production at the Calenturitas mine in 2004 and starting operations at Puerto Nuevo, a cutting-edge coal export port, in 2013. By 2014, the group was producing nearly 20 million tons of coal annually. Prodeco has also been committed to quality management, securing ISO 9001:2015 certification for Puerto Nuevo in 2018. However, in 2021, the company submitted its resignation from the mining contracts for the Calenturitas and La Jagua mines, officially ending its coal mining operations in Colombia. By 2023, the process of liquidation and the reversion of mining infrastructure to the Colombian state was complete. Today, Prodeco is transitioning from mining, with a focus on sustainable practices as part of its long-term strategy.
